The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused Chief Justice His Lordship Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie of partisanship and of acting as a “political stooge” of government, after he defended the decision to issue special warrants for vacation trials in two High Courts. In a statement released on Tuesday, the NPP described the CJ’s public defence of the warrants as “unconvincing, legally unreasonable and revealing of the very partisan disposition it seeks to deny”. According to the NPP, 29 courts are currently sitting as vacation courts across the country. The settled practice, the party said, is for vacation courts to hear only…

The Member of Parliament for Tano North and Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Finance Committee, Dr Gideon Boako, has said Ghana’s economic recovery cannot be considered complete unless improvements in macroeconomic indicators translate into better living conditions for ordinary citizens. Dr Boako said economic performance should ultimately be judged by the experiences of unemployed graduates, traders, farmers, contractors and households rather than solely by figures such as inflation, fiscal balances and economic growth. He argued that citizens are more concerned about access to jobs, functioning businesses, good roads and the ability to meet their daily needs than positive statistics presented…

The Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Finance Committee and Member of Parliament for Tano North, Dr Gideon Boako, has cautioned Ghanaians against giving any political party an overwhelming majority in Parliament, arguing that such dominance weakens democratic accountability. Addressing Parliament on Friday, July 31, Dr Boako said the government’s numerical advantage in the House has made it difficult for the Minority’s concerns to influence policy decisions, particularly on tax-related legislation. He alleged that the government’s handling of recent tax proposals demonstrates a disregard for opposing views, insisting that Parliament should provide meaningful checks and balances rather than simply endorsing government…

Former Minister of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah has criticised the government’s proposed modalities for the election of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), describing the arrangement as inconsistent with calls for a non-partisan local governance system. In a Facebook post on Friday, Mr Korsah said the decision for political authorities to nominate five persons, from whom three would be shortlisted for an election, was disappointing and did not represent the kind of independent local-level elections many Ghanaians had anticipated. He argued that the proposed process would maintain the influence of political parties in the…
