Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected US President Donald Trump’s 15-point plan for Gaza, stating that no military pull-out will happen until Hamas is “genuinely” disarmed. Trump’s Board of Peace said last month it had reached an agreement for the “complete disarmament” of Hamas and other armed groups in Gaza. But Hamas said handing over its heavy weapons was contingent on Israel ending “all forms of aggression” and withdrawing its forces from Gaza. On Sunday, a senior Board of Peace official insisted the US-backed peace plan for the territory remained the only way forward. Israel has continued to carry…
Radio Caroline has been found in breach of broadcasting rules after it mistakenly announced the death of King Charles III. The station aired three pre-recorded announcements falsely stating the King had died during the Barry Marsh Show on 19 May. The messages claimed the “news media” had “confirmed” the death, and were followed by the national anthem and 16 minutes of silence on DAB+, while AM listeners heard back-up music. A correction and apology was broadcast 30 minutes later. The ruling by media watchdog Ofcom stated that once the staff member who accidentally played the files realised what they had…
Accra came to a standstill on Thursday as thousands of Ghanaians including New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters, civil society activists and members of some opposition political parties marched through the capital in a massive demonstration dubbed ‘Democracy Under Attack’. But this was not just about court cases and arrests. The core of the protest was a warning: that Ghana’s democracy itself is being chipped away through selective prosecutions and what the demonstrators call the arbitrary arrest of citizens who speak against the government. The demonstrators pointed to two trends since the Mahama-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) took office. First, they…
Donald Trump said the Strait of Hormuz would open “very soon” or Iran would be “hit very hard” as oil prices fell to a three-week low amid hopes of a deal. The US president was speaking to Fox News after Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent both said talks had progressed to allow shipments potentially to resume later this week. On Tuesday, the cost of a barrel of Brent crude, the global benchmark for oil prices, fell by almost 5% to under $80 (£60) on the news of supply disruptions potentially being eased. It continued to…
The Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Finance Committee, Dr Gideon Boako, has drawn attention to key concerns raised by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) regarding Ghana’s mining sector, the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme and the financial position of the Bank of Ghana. In his latest economic commentary, ‘The Gboako Economic Digest – #001/26’, the Tano North Member of Parliament said the IMF acknowledged that the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme had helped strengthen Ghana’s foreign reserves and supported exchange-rate stability. However, he noted that the Fund estimated the programme also generated financial losses of about $1.7 billion, equivalent to 1.5 per…

Around 72,000 migrants crossed into the Spanish territory in North Africa between 30 and 31 July, Spain’s Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said. He added that an estimated 70,000 have since been returned to Morocco. At least 75 people died on the Spanish side of the border, while 11 deaths were reported in Morocco.
